Day Without Immigrants: Multiple DC area restaurants closed Monday

A movement aimed at demonstrating how vital immigrants are to the U.S. economy is planned for Monday in Washington, D.C. and across the country.

What is the A Day Without Immigrants movement

Big picture view:

It's called A Day Without Immigrants, with the movement encouraging immigrants to refrain from going to work, school and shopping to highlight the essential role immigrants play in the economy and local communities.

The movement has been spreading on social media over the past several days. And now, many businesses nationwide are participating in solidarity with immigrant communities.

This comes amid President Donald Trump's first month back in office, and as he promises to crackdown on immigration.

  • Pearl's Bagels
  • Hiraya
  • La Casita Pupuseria

  • Centrado Café Shop
  • Republic Cantina

At Pearl's Bagel's in D.C., their staff will receive a "paid day off in order to make their voices heard and stress the importance of immigrants to our community and local economy," according to their Instagram.

A Day Without Immigrants held in 2017

Dig deeper:

A Day Without Immigrants was also held on Feb. 16, 2017, to send a message to President Trump in response to his pledges to crackdown on immigrants entering the United States.

That day, the boycott also called for immigrants not to attend work, open their businesses, spend money or even take their children to school.
