Dangerously cold temperatures grip DC region; extreme wind chills make it feel like it's below zero
WASHINGTON (FOX 5 DC) - Brutally cold temperatures and extreme wind chills are making it feel like it's below zero across much of the region Monday.
The high pressure from the north will grip the area for the entire day. High temperatures are only likely to reach the low 20s even though it will look sunny and bright overhead. The gusty winds will make it feel like it is negative five to negative 15 degrees outside. The windy arctic air could reach gusts of around 15 miles per hour before the day is over.
A Wind Chill Advisory has been put into place in nearly all parts of the region Monday until 11 a.m. According to the National Weather Service, a Wind Chill Advisory means cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.
The National Weather Service recommends adjusting your schedule to avoid being outside during the coldest part of the day, typically the early morning. Be sure to make sure pets are not overly exposed to the extreme cold and be sure to have at least a half a tank of gas if you are driving.
If you must be outside, be sure to prepare. Wear several layers of clothing, warm hats and gloves. Also wear warm, waterproof shoes and a face mask to guard from blasts of wind.
Expect the winds to calm down tomorrow as temperatures move into the 30s. Showers are possible later in the week as temperatures rise into the 50s. The weekend looks dry but chilly as temperatures drop back into the 30s.
