Cal Ripken Jr., Kevin Spacey hold charitiy event

WASHINGTON - Hall-of-Famer Cal Ripken Jr. and actor Kevin Spacey teamed up at the 'Under The Lights' charity event Monday to help children who need it the most. Through their charities, the two work to provide youth with opportunities that they might not otherwise get.

The night was full of fun and included Ripken and Spacey sitting down and sharing stories about their careers.

"It's about remembering where you came from," Ripken said about the event. Spacey said he was inspired to help other by his mentor, Jack Lemmon, who told him that if you do well in the business - make sure to 'send the elevator back down' to help others.

Spacey also shared with Kevin that he is not the kind of actor that becomes the characters he plays in his films. "When I hang the costume up at night the character stays with it. I'm not haunted by or anything like that with characters. I'm always looking forward to what's next," he said.

Ripken, who played 21 seasons with the Baltimore Orioles and who holds the record for consecutive games played at 2,632, shared his thoughts about the Papelbon-Harper incident.

"We kept those things secret in my day, so you wouldn't know about those things" he told Kevin who asked about anything similar that happened during his career. "I can see how tempers flare. I can see how when a season doesn't go the way you thought it would, and you get eliminated from the playoffs, emotions can be a little higher."

"It happens," Ripken continued. "The Nationals dealt with it in their way. And the two principles, Papelbon and Harper seemed to have ironed it out as well. So I don't think it's an issue."

Kevin added that someone in the crowd at the event asked Ripken if he would ever manage the Washington Nationals to which Kevin Spacey interceded, "$300 million, 15 year contract." Cal smiled and nodded. Maybe one day.

The event raised nearly $250,000 for their charities.
