'Do you want to die?': Bus driver accused of strangling pregnant woman in Montgomery County
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. - A bus driver in Montgomery County has been arrested after police say he strangled a pregnant woman.
Court documents detail the incident from different points of view, including what occurred based on surveillance video reviewed by authorities.
What we know:
The suspect has been identified as Paul Simms. He has been charged with first-degree assault, second-degree assault, crime of violence against a pregnant person, and reckless endangerment.
The entire incident was captured on video and reviewed by officials and conflicted with the driver's description of the incident.
Authorities say Simms began cursing at the pregnant woman before he was making his turn into the bus station, and she was nowhere near his bus despite him stating that she was. Simms immediately confronted the woman as she entered the bus, authorities saying he was "very aggressive verbally."
The woman remained calm, and after several minutes started to yell at Simms in response to his behavior. Authorities say the woman mentioned multiple times during the altercation she mentioned she was pregnant and nothing should happen to her baby.
Simms said to the woman, "Do you want to die?" Authorities say Simms also stated, "He didn't give a sh** about her baby." Shortly after, Simms opened his guard door and aggressively grabbed the woman by her throat with his hands and appeared to strangle her and slammed her body and head against the front bus window while screaming.
According to authorities, the woman appeared to gasp for air from the audio of the video. The woman also appeared defenseless due to her smaller frame and height in comparison to Simms.
The other side:
According to the bus driver, the woman involved walked in front of his bus while he was turning into the bus station. The bus driver says the woman entered the bus screaming and yelling at him. While standing in front of the driver's seat, the woman continued to yell, which caused spit to hit his face. In response, he stated "if you spit on my face again I'm gonna slap the sh** out of you."
The driver then stood up from his seat and grabbed the woman by her neck and moved her into the passenger side windshield. According to him, he then pushed her off the bus, and she fell on her back when she was pushed off the bus.
What we don't know:
The video of this incident has not been released. A mugshot has not been released at this time.
