FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (FOX 5 DC) - A portion of the Capital Beltway's inner loop has reopened following a major crash involving a tanker truck that shut down traffic along the American Legion Bridge for 12 hours.
The crash happened Thursday afternoon and involved the truck as well as three other vehicles. Officials say 8500 gallons of fuel spilled onto the roadway but was contained by cleanup crews before it could reach the Potomac River.
Traffic on that portion of the beltway was impacted as well as traffic across the region as motorists flooded local and side roads in search of detours.
Authorities say the bridge opned around 2:30 a.m. Friday. Officials say one person suffered minor injuries and the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
