ACT OF KINDNESS: Hyattsville police officers pay for homeless family's hotel stay

Three Hyattsville police officers are being called heroes for coming to the rescue of a homeless woman and her three children.

Antonique Golden-Abban and her three kids, ages 8, 3 and 1, were outside in Hyattsville Monday night in the cold weather with nowhere to go. All of the shelters were full, so she called 911 and the three officers responded.

When they got there, they heard Golden-Abban's story. She was soon blown away by the officers' generosity as they gave her money to pay for a hotel for her and her kids to stay in. They also gave her money for Metro fare for the next day and food to eat as well.

"When the lady, she got arrested and she ended up dying in the jail, that day I was like, 'You know what? I don't want my son to be a police officer, not ever to be a police officer,'" Golden-Abban recalled. "But as soon as this happened, I was like, 'Wow!'"

The officers' kindness totally changed her view of the police entirely.

The cops that responded Monday night told us there was no question they knew what they had to do.

"It seemed so cold and I looked at her and she seemed so depressed, so confused," said Hyattsville Police Officer Kirk Pile. "It was really cold outside and the kids were just standing there by her and she had one kid in a baby stroller and we couldn't leave her out there."

The officers said they don't encounter this all the time and it was a very unique situation. However, they are afraid that this will happen more and more as we enter the winter months.

Despite all of this, Golden-Abban said she and her kids will have to leave their current shelter Wednesday morning and this whole process will start over again as they will have to try to find another shelter to stay at for the following night.
