9 hurt, 2 arrested in altercation outside Turkish Embassy in DC

WASHINGTON - Authorities say nine people were hurt and two arrests were made during an altercation at the Turkish ambassador's residence in Washington D.C.

D.C. Police said the skirmish took place at around 4 p.m. Tuesday. The protest came as President Donald Trump met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the White House earlier in the day.

One person arrested was charged with assaulting a police officer. The other person was charged with assault.

Traffic was temporarily shut down in both directions at Sheridan Circle between Massachusetts Avenue and 22nd Street. The State Department declined to comment.

D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham will take questions from the media about the incident in at a news conference scheduled for 1 pm Wednesday.

On Wednesday morning, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser released the following statement:

"What we saw yesterday - a violent attack on a peaceful demonstration - is an affront to DC values and our rights as Americans. I strongly condemn these actions and have been briefed by Chief Newsham on our response. The Metropolitan Police Department will continue investigating the incident and will work with federal partners to ensure justice is served."
