69-year-old man killed in Alexandria hit-and-run

Fairfax County police are investigating a hit-and-run that left a 69-year-old man dead in the middle of the road.

It happened around 10:40 p.m. Sunday on Franconia Road in Alexandria, close to Thomas Edison High School. Police say Zahoor Ali Khan was crossing the road when he stopped in the median to wait for traffic and was struck. The victim was not in a crosswalk.

Witnesses report a vague description of a white or light-colored van, SUV or truck that took off. Officers say if a pedestrian is not in a crosswalk, often a driver is not found at fault unless they take off without helping.

Residents say this is a tough stretch of Franconia Road for pedestrians. There is a crosswalk by Edison High School, but not further down the block where many people cross for the McDonald's and other establishments.

Investigators are reaching out to businesses for surveillance video, and police say they want to hear from any witnesses.

At this point, it is not clear if speed or alcohol were factors in the hit-and-run.
