6-year-old anti-bullying activist gives speech at Montgomery County Council
GAITHERSBURG, Md. (FOX 5 DC) - At six years old, Cavanaugh Bell has already been an activist since kindergarten.
Bell has given speeches at Gaithersburg City Hall, met with lawmakers on Capitol Hill and on Tuesday, he gave a speech encouraging an end to bullying in front of the Montgomery County Council.
"I'm in first grade and I'm on a mission to change the world," Bell said in his Tuesday speech.
Bell also has a nonprofit aimed at ending bullying called Cool and Dope. His speech before the council prompted a proclamation from the members in support of his activism.
According to Bell, he has taken up the platform of stopping bullying after he faced repeated teasing by classmates who were not happy with how quickly he finished his classwork.
"When I got bullied I went to my mom and that's when I asked her if she would be sad if I died. Then I told her if I could have a nonprofit to stop bullying because it was really hurting me. So I didn't want that same thing to happen to other kids," said Bell.
Bell plans on taking part in a walk with an anti-bullying message in the near future. He also films inspirational videos where he encourages positivity.
"I'm very proud of him to be so young you know and I hope he continues with it," said Delores Simmons, Bell's grandmother.
