28 Blocks Mural in DC pays homage to men who built Lincoln Memorial

WASHINGTON - A new mural in a Northeast DC community is honoring the men who helped build one of our nation's most iconic monuments: The Lincoln Memorial.

The "28 Blocks Mural" is located in the Eckington neighborhood and pays homage to the freed men and Italian immigrants who helped construct the monument.

The mural gets its name from the 28 large slabs of marble used to create the Lincoln Memorial.

A quote from Frederick Douglass is prominently featured on the mural and reads:

"Without culture there can be no growth;
Without exertion, no acquisition;
Without friction, no polish;
Without labor, no knowledge;
Without action, no progress;
And without conflict, no victory."

Officials say 50,000 people a day can see the mural while riding the Red Line between the Rhode Island Avenue and NoMa-Gallaudet U New York Ave stations.
