2 construction workers rescued from disabled boom lift in Southeast DC

WASHINGTON - A high-angle rescue team was safely able to get two construction workers off of a disabled boom lift stuck about 10 stories high in Southeast D.C.

D.C. Fire and EMS Deputy Fire Chief John Donnelly said the workers were stranded on the construction equipment in the 1200 block of First Street at around 4:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Using ropes and a ladder, both workers were able to climb their way up from the lift bucket to the roof of the building just before 6:30 p.m. Donnelly said this was a very complex rescue that took about 90 minutes.

"There's a lot of things going on -- there's some weather coming through, just the fact they are up there and the machine isn't working the way it is supposed to," said Donnelly. "They could be in some danger if the weather changed or if something else went wrong with the machine. I think they were pretty comfortable. They hadn't been up there that long and they are out of there."
