Heightened security in place for Freedom 250 Grand Prix: What you need to know

Security preparations for the Freedom 250 Grand Prix have tightened across downtown, where no‑parking restrictions began two weeks ago and most routes are now closed for race operations.

Organizers say anyone planning to visit must have a ticket for venue access, fan zones and race viewing. Saturday features qualifying races and autograph sessions for zone ticket holders. Gates open at 8 a.m. Sunday, with the race scheduled to start at 1:05 p.m.

The race route was recently expanded to 147 laps through the National Mall to create a full 250‑mile event, adding seven turns and an extra pit stop.

Metro remains the best option for reaching downtown, with normal weekend service and additional trains on standby. Riders are encouraged to know their zone, download the Metro Pulse app for real‑time updates and look for commemorative SmarTrip cards available at select stations.

Security checkpoints will be fully active, and visitors can review prohibited items and road closures online.
