Snow Tuesday morning could impact commute; more winter weather possible later in the week

WASHINGTON - After a warm weekend, the D.C. area is moving back toward more a typical winter weather pattern with three possibilities for snow in the forecast from now through Sunday.

The FOX 5 Weather Team says the week's first threat of snow is early Tuesday morning. A quick band of snow is expected to begin between 3 a.m. and 10 a.m. The main factor in determining how big of an impact this has on our Tuesday morning commute is when it begins and how long it lasts.

However, don't expect a lot of accumulation. Only a trace amount to an inch of snow is expected to fall around the D.C. metro area. Slightly higher amounts are possible to the west -- where up to 2 to 3 inches could fall, and up north near the Pennsylvania line -- where 1 to 2 inches could be seen.

The bottom line for Tuesday morning is that most of the accumulation is expected on the grass and the main roads should be fine. The main concern is the timing.

The second chance for potential winter weather comes Thursday night when a rain-sleet mix could change to snow during the morning hours on Friday. The third possibility for precipitation this week comes Sunday morning when another rain-snow mix could impact the region before noon.
