National Park Service plans $54M repairs to restore DC’s historic fountains
Some of Washington’s most iconic fountains could soon be flowing again. The National Park Service plans to spend more than $54 million to repair and restore fountains across the District, including the long-dry cascading fountain at Meridian Hill Park, also known as Malcolm X Park. Newly released records show major repairs are planned at seven locations citywide, including Meridian Hill, Columbus Circle near Union Station and Freedom Plaza. The projects aim to address years of deterioration that residents and community leaders have called a symbol of neglect in some of the city’s most popular public spaces. Local officials and park users say the planned repairs are long overdue and welcome the investment in green and public spaces. Records indicate the work is expected to be completed by late spring or early summer, ahead of seasonal events. The National Park Service did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
