Wizards star John Wall hosts school backpack giveaway

Washington Wizards' John Wall gave back to the community on Saturday, hosting a backpack giveaway for 1,000 students.

The backpacks went to students from kindergarten all the way through 12th grade. The bags were full of lots of great items like Adidas shirts, school supplies, pencils, and folders.

Body Armor, EA Sports, KIND Bars and the Washington Wizards joined in on the event, held at Goodman League basketball court in Southeast DC.

This is the fifth year the John Wall Family Foundation held this event. The Wall Foundation works with various nonprofit organizations around town to choose recipients for the giveaway.

Each recipient got a ticket and was escorted and by a chaperone to get the goodies.

"I think backpacks and pencils, notebooks, all those types of things you need, because sometimes, maybe just a notebook, trying to survive. I just try to make it easier for their parents who don't have to do it and get all those things," said Wall at the event.

Wall says that one of the first lessons he learned that it's better to give than to receive, especially after watching his own mom work multiple jobs so that he could play basketball.
