Wayne State football team will wear 100th anniversary uniforms to honor Medal of Honor recipients
DETROIT (WJBK) - On Saturday night, the Wayne State football team will take the field against Saginaw Valley State. But if you're looking to identify them based on the name on the back of the jersey, you will be out of luck as the team is wearing very special jerseys to honor the military.
The Wayne State University Department of Athletics unveiled the new uniforms on Thursday that celebrate the 100th anniversary of WSU with a logo. They also feature the logo for the Medal of Honor and on the back is the last name of a Medal of Honor recipient.
The new uniform will be worn for the first time in a game on Saturday when Saginaw Valley comes in.
The Medal of Honor is the highest award for valor that can be bestowed on a member of the armed services. Only 3,499 recipients in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard have been awarded the incredible honor.
"Any time you celebrate a milestone like 100 years, you have a lot of proud moments and accomplishments to reflect upon," said WSU Director of Athletics Rob Fournier. "However, the more I thought about a century of athletics at WSU, I couldn't help but think of those who have sacrificed so much so that we could have those 100 years. And I kept coming back to the military. And so as we celebrate our 100 years, we likewise pay tribute to those who have performed in the most difficult of situations to give us the freedom to play kid's games. The Medal of Honor is the greatest testament in our country to that sacrifice. So all our teams will have the name of one of those heroes on their backs, because as we know, they have always had our backs."
Currently, there are only 72 living recipients of the Medal of Honor.
The school says it will continue to celebrate 100 years of WSU athletics in all sports.
