D.C. United's Wayne Rooney arrested for public intoxication at Dulles in December, officials say

D.C. United star Wayne Rooney was arrested in December, authorities say.

On Dec. 16, the English soccer star was arrested at Dulles International Airport by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police (MWAA) for public swearing and intoxication.

MWAA said Rooney had triggered an airport door alarm but did not breach security. He was then charged with public intoxication and transported to Loudoun County Detention Center to be held until sober.

Kraig Troxell with Loudoun County Sheriff's Office says Rooney was brought into their custody from MWAA police, and was later released on a personal recognizance bond.

Rooney was ordered to pay a $25 fine as well as a $91 fine.

According to Loudoun County court documents, Rooney waived an adjudicatory Jan. 24. court date.

The day prior to his arrest, Rooney tweeted about attending a Formula E auto race in Saudi Arabia.

Prior to his move to the States, Rooney was arrested by police in Britain for drunk driving on Sept. 1, 2017.

BBC reported that Rooney had almost three times the legal limit BAC when he was stopped by police.

The then-striker for Everton F.C. plead guilty to the charges, was ordered to pay a fine, banned from driving for two years and ordered to perform 100 hours of unpaid work as part of a 12-month community order.
