Woman sexually assaulted on Georgetown sidewalk; neighbor gives chase but suspect gets away
WASHINGTON - Neighbors came to the rescue of a woman who was the victim of a sexual assault Wednesday night along a Georgetown sidewalk.
The incident happened around 8:15 p.m. Wednesday near 33rd Street and Dent Place in the northwest.
Witnesses say they heard a woman screaming when the suspect, described as a white man in his 20s or 30s wearing a hooded sweatshirt, walked up to her and groped her.
One neighbor, who heard the screams, ran from their home and chased the attacker down the street.
Police arrived quickly and conducted an aerial search of the area, however, the suspect was able to get away.
This incident is one of several sexual assaults reported in the Georgetown area since earlier this summer. From August 3rd to September 12th, police responded to four incidents that involved woman being sexually assaulted on parts of 35th Street, T Street on Potomac Avenue.
Police made an arrest following a September 17sexual assault on the 3300 block of Prospect Street. In that incident, officers were on heightened patrol when they observed a man grope a woman. They arrested 34-year-old Sergio Waldo Velaquez-Cardozo, from Falls Church, VA, who faces Third Degree Sexual Abuse charges.
At this time, none of the Georgetown incidents have been connected by police.
The suspect in the 33rd Street is still at large.
