Woman charged with murder of her great-grandmother inside their Wheaton home
WHEATON, Md. - Police have arrested a 22-year-old woman for the murder of her great-grandmother in Wheaton.
Montgomery County police say 80-year-old Doris Elizabeth Shelton was found unresponsive and not breathing by her husband Friday afternoon inside of their home in the 10500 block of Cascade Place. The victim's husband called 911 and first responders pronounced Shelton dead at the scene.
Officers determined Shelton had suffered apparent trauma to her body and officers began to investigate her death as a homicide.
Investigators later identified Shannon Marci Jefferson Lozano as a suspect in her great-grandmother's death and she was arrested a short distance from their Wheaton home by Maryland-National Capital Park Police after a lookout was put out.
Police say they interviewed Lozano at their headquarters and she "made a statement implicating herself in the assault of her great-grandmother."
Residents in the neighborhood told FOX 5 they were very sad to hear about the death of their neighbor. They said she was quiet, mostly kept to herself and lived with her husband, who was friendly and more outgoing. The couple has lived in their home for decades.
Lozano is charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bond.
