Wiedefeld tells FOX 5 Metro stations not closing during off-peak hours; idea is worse-case-scenario

"No. That's wrong," Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld told FOX 5's Bob Barnard when asked about talk of closing some Metro stations during off-peak hours.

"During the last meeting with the board, we basically wanted to start the discussion of what we're up against going into 2018 budget," he said.

He said the idea of closing the stations was an illustration of the seriousness of the situation. "I'll be coming up with my proposal next month. I think it starts to frame the size of the issues that we're dealing with," he said.

He said his proposal will be designed to minimize the impact on riders while dealing with the financial realities of the situation.

In a map presented last week regarding Metro's operating budget, a total of 20 stations are a part of this proposal and include six stations in D.C. and seven stations each in Maryland and Virginia.

The stops include:

- White Flint
- Forest Glen
- Spring Hill
- Greensboro
- McLean
- West Falls Church-VT/UVA
- Virginia Square-GMU
- Van Dorn Street
- Eisenhower Avenue
- Congress Heights
- Naylor Road
- Stadium-Armory
- Benning Road
- Capital Heights
- Addison Road-Seat Pleasant
- Morgan Boulevard
- Minnesota Avenue
- Deanwood
- Cheverly
- Landover
