Weekend winter weather blast expected to bring some snow, wintry mix to DC region
WASHINGTON (FOX 5 DC) - The snow is gone -- for now! The winter blast that moved into our area Thursday night quickly passed through our region leaving behind about an inch of snow across the area.
We won't see any more of the white stuff Friday but a storm system moving our direction is likely to bring a wintry mix our way Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday morning should be fine, says FOX 5's Mike Thomas, who is keeping an eye on the forecast. It's as we get into the afternoon that things start to get tricky, he says.
The weather system will move in between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. and could start off as a wintry mix. Parts of the Maryland panhandle and West Virginia could see heavy snow as the system begins in move into the region.
As we move into the evening Saturday and early morning Sunday, warmer air turns everything into rain and will keep it that way into the afternoon. Before all is said an done, a second quick blast of snow may hit us as the system moves away from our region.
As the system moves out Sunday night, bitter cold temperature set in. Negative double-digit wind chills are expected Monday morning with some as low as 20 degrees below. Watch out for a flash-freeze Sunday night into Monday morning, Thomas says, as a cold drop in the temperatures could freeze up some of the rain that fell earlier in the day.
