WASHINGTON – A water main break has closed a portion of Southern Avenue in southeast D.C.

Crews were alerted sometime around 4 a.m.

The incident appears to have occurred in Prince George's County, however, water from the break has run downhill and frozen, causing Southern Avenue to be closed from 51st Street to Easy Place.

It is unclear when repairs will be completed.

An extraordinarily high volume of calls for water main breaks and leaks have been received by the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission.

Freezing temperatures have sent repair crews to more than 160 calls in Montgomery and Prince George's counties in just the last seven days.
