Washington Gas crews have repaired a damaged service line and completed safety checks after a Friday night explosion left one worker seriously injured and hundreds of customers without gas service.

What we know:

Officials said Tuesday morning that service has been safely restored to about 40% of affected customer meters. The process involves turning meters back on one by one and relighting appliances, including furnaces, water heaters and stoves.

In larger buildings and complexes, a single meter can serve many residents, so crews are prioritizing critical facilities such as schools, medical centers and densely populated residential buildings. Technicians are working across multifamily properties, commercial sites and single‑family homes to restore service and relight appliances.

More than 500 without gas after explosion in Beltsville as temperatures drop

As frigid temperatures return, more than 500 people are without gas in Prince George’s County. Washington Gas crews are working to repair a line that caused an explosion on Friday night. FOX 5's Homa Bash has more.

The explosion happened around 10 p.m. Friday on Cherry Hill Road in Beltsville. Washington Gas says third‑party excavation work damaged a four‑inch service line, and while crews were responding to repair it, gas ignited and caused the explosion. The injured worker is now in stable condition.

Officials said service has already been fully restored to Riderwood Senior Living Community, High Point High School and other critical sites.

The utility company says they expect to make significant progress on service restoration on Tuesday, adding that with customer cooperation in providing access to meters, full restoration across the area is anticipated in the next 24 to 48 hours.

Washington Gas says it will continue posting updates on its website as more information becomes available.
