US Route 50 reopens after Annapolis accident forces closure

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- U.S. Route 50 in Maryland has reopened after a fatal pedestrian accident in the Annapolis area caused its closure and a major back-up.

The Maryland State Highway Administration says all the westbound lanes were closed beyond Interstate 97 on Wednesday morning because of the crash. The ramp from southbound Interstate 97 to westbound Route 50 also was closed.

The closures were lifted around 6 a.m. Images on local TV stations showed a traffic backup for miles just after the re-opening.

Route 50 feeds into the Washington, D.C. area.

No more details about the crash that triggered the closure were immediately available.
