Upper Marlboro man charged with robbery after Patuxent Elementary School incident

An Upper Marlboro man is charged with robbery after an incident at Patuxent Elementary school that prompted the school to go on lockdown, and drew a large police presence.

Prince George's County police say 35-year-old Ricard Campbell of Wardlow Road entered the school and made threatening statements to a staff member. He also robbed a staff member, taking their jewelry, police say.

Police initially indicated they were responding to the school after a report of shots being fired - they later learned that a staff member mistook a barbecue lighter for a gun.

An aftercare program was in session at the school during the incident, and six children and several adults had to be escorted from the building.
