Teen killed in accident after police say he fled during attempted traffic stop
STERLING, Va. - A teenager is dead and another remains hospitalized following a crash police say happened after they attempted to flee the scene of a traffic stop.
A Loudoun County Sheriff's Deputy on patrol early Sunday morning observed the vehicle on East Beech Road driving with its headlights off and tried to pull them over. Police say the driver began to stop but then raced away at a high rate of speed.
The deputy lost sight of the vehicle after a short pursuit and later found the car had crashed into two parked vehicles.
The driver died at the scene, investigators say. The passenger was airlifted to Inova Fairfax Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
On Monday, officials identified the driver as 15-year-old Wilberto Pitre III. He was a student at Loudoun Valley High School.
Pitre did not have a driver's license or a learner's permit, police say.
School counselors were available Monday to speak with students about the accident.
The crash remains under investigation at this time.
