Slippery roads, school closings and delays following day of snow in DC region

Commuters faced challenges on the roadways Friday one day after a wintry mix hit the D.C. region bringing with it the first snow of the season for much of the area.

Dozens of schools either closed or delayed their opening times. The storm began Thursday morning dropping snow and sleet across the DMC before changing to all rain later in the evening.

In Virginia, FOX 5's Melanie Alnwick was along Route 28 in Prince William County where many of the highway ramps were iced over. In Loudoun County, several crashes were reported. Emergency crews closed parts of Route 606 and Route 15 due to icy conditions.

Along Route 7 near the Dulles Toll Road, ice caused detours and delays and forced drivers to turn around before crossing the overpass.

FOX 5's Bob Barnard reported delays on Route 123 at Interstate 495 in the Tysons Corner area.
