Shots strike Herndon apartment complex; unclear if gas leak is related

Shots were fired into an apartment complex early Monday morning in Fairfax County, officials say.

Police say they responded to the 13600 block of Legacy Circle in the Herndon area around 2 a.m. Monday where shell casings were found.

Officers searched the area on ground and by helicopter. Authorities say gunfire did strike the apartment structure.

No injuries were reported but officials did say repairs were being made after an odor of gas was reported in the area. It is unclear if the odor of gas was related to shots being fired.

There were no evacuations and police cannot confirm if the shooting was random or intentional. The investigation is still underway.
