Reserve officer helps save life of sailor shot at going away party

WASHINGTON - A reserve officer with the D.C. Police Department helped save a sailor who was shot after his deployment going away party early Saturday.

Zane Kentner, based at Naval Support Activity Bethesda, was shot near a Dupont Circle bar when police say he tried to intervene after the suspect assaulted two people.

As police raced after the gunman in squad cars and on foot, reserve officer Scooter Slade rushed to help Kentner.

Officers familiar with what happened tell FOX 5 that Slade was able to give Kentner medical care after Kentner's lung collapsed, and helped save his life.

Slade is part of a team of 70 volunteer officers who get training that "mirrors that of a career officer," according to D.C. police.

He is also a volunteer firefighter.

At last check, Kentner was in stable condition at the hospital and his friends tell FOX 5 his condition is improving.

Police arrested 27-year-old Ryan Demtric Matthews of Northwest D.C. He has been charged with assault with intent to kill, carrying a pistol without a license, possession of an unregistered firearm and ammunition and two counts of simple assault.
