Police: Woman sexually assaulted at Cheverly Metro Station in Prince George's County

CHEVERLY, Md. (FOX 5 DC) -- A woman was sexually assaulted at the Cheverly Metro Station on Thursday afternoon.

According to the Metro Transit Police, the woman was approached by a male suspect, later identified as Abraham Berhanu Taddesse, 44, and sexually assaulted on the platform at around 12:30 p.m.

After the assault, police sayTaddesse boarded a train and exited at the Deanwood station, which is one stop away from the Cheverly station. The woman was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.

Police say no other riders and witnesses were in the area at the time of the incident.

MTPD officers located Taddesse after receiving a call from the station manager and determining his path of travel after viewing surveillance cameras. Taddesse was taken into custody a short distance away from the Deanwood station after he was positively identified, according to police.

Police say Taddesse is being held on a "fugitive from justice" charge because he crossed into the District after the assault. He has been charged with first-degree rape.

Police say they are working on a warrant in Maryland and are planning to arrange for Taddesse's extradition.
