A 22-year-old University of Maryland student reported missing last week has been found safe and reunited with his family, campus police announced Wednesday.

Dilan Shaan Ashar was reported missing on Oct. 2 after being last seen on security footage around 2:30 a.m. at the Terrapin Trail Garage on campus. His parents filed a missing persons report with the Prince George’s County Police Department, and his family released a public video appealing for information and his safe return.

The search began late Friday night after campus security officials reviewed the garage surveillance footage. Detectives initially searched the garage before expanding operations over the following days to include campus grounds and surrounding areas.

Authorities deployed drones for aerial searches over wooded areas near the garage and later at the university golf course. Ground searches involved nearly 50 personnel and nine K-9 units covering a 110-acre area surrounding the garage.

Police confirmed Wednesday that Ashar was located safe and returned to his family.

Authorities are expected to share details about where he was found and the circumstances behind his disappearance at a briefing on Thursday.
