New video shows officer-involved shooting outside Prince George's County liquor store
EDMONSTON, Md. - Cellphone video recorded by a witness shows what happened in the moments leading up to a police-involved shooting that took place outside a Prince George's County liquor store on Thursday. A FOX 5 DC viewer shared the video showing the encounter with reporter Paul Wagner on Friday.
Officials said a man was shot by an officer outside the liquor store, located at 4221 Kenilworth Avenue in the town of Edmonston near the Bladensburg area.
On Thursday, multiple witnesses told Wagner a man with a heavy coat and backpack was told to get on the ground by an officer with the Edmonston Police Department. The witnesses told Wagner the man began throwing items at the officer before he charged at the officer. According to witnesses, the officer first pulled out a Taser and gave several commands before shooting his gun several times.
Officials confirmed the officer with the Edmonston Police Department shot the man after the he became "combative" and showed "aggressive behavior."
The cellphone video shows the officer trying to approach the man, who appears to lunge at and throw something at the officer during the encounter. That's when the officer opens fire, with a total of four shots being fired. It's unclear why the officer was trying to stop the man in the first place.
Officials said Thursday the man was rushed to the hospital and he was listed in critical but stable condition. Authorities said the officer was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
The Prince George's County Police Department was handling the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
