Montgomery County police shoot, kill armed bank robber in Silver Spring, officials say

An armed bank robber was shot and killed by police in Montgomery County on Wednesday, according to officials.

The Montgomery County Police Department said the bank robbery happened at the BB&T Bank in the 1100 block of Wayne Avenue in Silver Spring near the Silver Spring Metro station.

Authorities said the suspect, only described as a male, walked into the bank and told a manager he had a bomb in his backpack and showed the employee a handgun. When the suspect demanded $20,000, the manager walked over to the teller station and triggered the panic button, according to police.

Officials said the suspect fled the bank without any money and ran into a back alleyway near the Silver Spring Metro station where he was confronted by an officer.

After a confrontation, authorities said the officer shot the suspect. The suspect was rushed to the hospital where he died, according to officials. Police said the officer was not injured during the confrontation.

A bomb squad was called to the scene to inspect the backpack and nearby buildings were evacuated as a precaution.
