Md. corrections officer charged with trying to rape pre-trial inmate

ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) -- Montgomery County Police have arrested a corrections officer they say tried to rape a pre-trial services inmate on a work detail.

Thirty-two-year-old Jereme Simmons of Laurel was arrested Tuesday and charged with attempted second-degree rape and other offenses.

Police say last month, Simmons, an officer with the county Department of Corrections, was overseeing pre-trial inmates at a work detail at a state warehouse. Authorities say one of the inmates was a woman who was not incarcerated but under supervision to complete community service.

Officers say Simmons assaulted the woman in a warehouse bathroom. Detectives say Simmons told the woman that if they had sex another time, he would mark her community service hours as completed.

Police arranged for the woman to meet Simmons while detectives recorded the conversation.
