Maryland Gov. Hogan calls for special session to elect House Speaker successor

Gov. Larry Hogan has called for a special session of the Maryland General Assembly to elect a successor to House Speaker Michael Busch.

Busch died on April 7 at the age of 72. He was the longest serving speaker in Maryland's history, having been appointed to the post in 2003.

Busch was first elected to the House in 1986. His district included the state capital of Annapolis.

The Special Assembly is set to meet on May 1.

In his announcement regarding the special session, Hogan said:

"As we close a significant chapter in our history, we will continue the critical work Mike Busch dedicated so much of his life to doing."
