Man drowns in Joe Pool Lake

A man who was pulled from Joe Pool Lake Tuesday has died.

Tyron Carter, 27, was found in the water near Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie around 6 p.m. He was taken to Methodist Medical Center in Mansfield, but he did not survive.

Tiffany Carter, Tyron's girlfriend, said Tyron was swimming out to a buoy.

"He turned around and looked at me, and he kept swimming to the yellow thing," Tiffany said. "He went under water and he didn't come back."

Tiffany also said Tyron, a father of four, was a good swimmer and had served a short stint in the military. She said during their outing to the lake, she posted a Snapchat video of Tyron with her 7-year-old son, Trey, in the shallow water of the lake. Trey was afraid of the water.

"My baby got scared and he brought him back to me. He kissed me and said, 'Watch me swim out there.' I said, 'No!' He said, 'Military, military, stop being so scary.' And he swam and he didn't come back."

Grand Prairie's fire department, including a dive team, arrived within six minutes of the 911 call. They located Tyron 150 feet from shore in water about 11 to 12 feet deep 46 minutes later.

Tiffany and Tyron had plans to marry next year. Tiffany had already begun to use Tyron's last name. Carter worked as a security guard at the Potter House.

"He was so amazing and he always had a smile," Tiffany said. "He was so happy and fun to be around."

Firefighters said the lake conditions at the time of the incident were calm.
