Man accused of exposing himself to 8-year-old girl at Home Depot arrested, police say

WOODBRIDGE, Va. - Police have identified and arrested a man they say exposed himself to a young girl and assaulted her relative at a hardware store in Virginia.

36-year-old Matthew Joseph Newton was arrested Thursday morning without incident, police say. He faces charges of indecent exposure, taking indecent liberties with a child and assault and battery after police say he exposed himself and made an obscene gesture to an 8-year-old girl at a Home Depot in Woodbridge.

Officers say after the alleged incident, a 47-year-old female family member of the girl confronted Newton and took a picture of him. They say Newton assaulted the woman and fled the area.

After releasing the picture, police say they received multiple phone calls from tipsters who identified Newton.

Newton is scheduled for an October 27th court appearance. He is being held without bond.
