Knife-wielding Prince George's Co volunteer firefighter shot by police in Anne Arundel county

An armed man who was shot by Anne Arundel County police on Friday is a Prince George's County volunteer firefighter, the fire department said on Saturday.

They said the firefighter suffered a life threatening injury, and is in critical condition at a local trauma center.

According to police, a fire crew was responding to the scene of a crash involving a pedestrian on Route 50 in Davidsonville around 9:44 p.m. when they were confronted by a man with a knife.

When police arrived, they ordered the man to drop his weapon.

The man refused to discard the knife and drop to the ground, and an officer fired, striking him with one bullet.

The officer - who has not been identified - is a 20-year veteran.
