IRS building closed Tuesday follow transformer fire

The IRS Headquarters building at 1111 Constitution Ave. will be closed Tuesday, April 5, following the basement fire on Monday afternoon.

The building remains without full electricity, and the air handling system is inoperable. No one was injured in the incident, and work crews continue to assess the situation.

IRS employees who are telework-ready should plan on working remotely.

Other IRS offices in the Washington metro area and other parts remain in operation and are not affected.

The IRS reminds taxpayers this building does not affect tax return filing or processing. Tax return processing is not handled in the headquarters building.

The investigation is continuing, but is believed to have been contained in one room and related to an electrical issue. The building had already been closed around 2:45 due to electrical issues with the air conditioning system.
