Iran latest: Trump threatens to hit Iran 'very hard tonight'

The Brief

    • The U.S. launched another round of airstrikes in Iran on Thursday morning.
    • Top Iranian officials pleaded to President Trump to stop the bombing, according to a Fox News report.
    • In a post on Truth Social, Trump vowed that the U.S. would hit Iran "VERY HARD TONIGHT," also threatening to "assume total control" of Iran’s oil and gas, including the key Kharg Island, in the "not too distant future." 

The hostilities that erupted earlier in the week continued Thursday morning when the United States launched a new round of airstrikes on Iran, which soon reciprocated with its own attacks on three neighboring countries. The exchange was the third one of the week as the two-month-old ceasefire was tested again. 

In Iran, explosions were heard around Tehran and the port city of Bandar Abbas, as well as areas along the Strait of Hormuz. Its military responded with strikes targeting the nations of Bahrain, Kuwait, and Jordan, all of which host U.S. troops.

Trump vows to hit Iran ‘VERY HARD TONIGHT’

9:40 a.m. ET:  In a post on Truth Social, Trump vowed that the U.S. would hit Iran "VERY HARD TONIGHT," also threatening to "assume total control" of Iran’s oil and gas, including the key Kharg Island, in the "not too distant future." 

The strikes being traded between the U.S. and Iran this week are pushing the Middle East back toward full-scale war. 

US fires on another oil tanker

7:45 a.m. ET: U.S. forces have fired upon a third vessel in as many days during the blockade against Iran in the Arabian Sea. 

Just after 11 p.m. Eastern, the Guinea-Bissau flagged M/T Jalveer, attempted to transport oil from Iran and was disabled after the U.S. military fired two Hellfire missiles into the ship's engine room. 

Two additional ships were disabled, one on Monday and another on Tuesday after they attempted to sail to an Iranian port and transport Iranian oil. 

In total, nine ships have been disabled by U.S. forces, according to U.S. Central Command, and 135 ships have been redirected from the blockade. 

Trump talks with Iranian leadership

6:22 a.m. ET: President Trump told Fox News he spoke with top Iranian officials who made a plea to him to stop the U.S. bombing attacks. 

Additionally, 49 Tomahawk missiles along with fighter jets targeting radar and air defense systems were involved in the U.S. operation, Trump told the network.
