I-495 Inner Loop remains closed after tanker truck rollover

Crews are at the scene after a tanker truck flipped onto its side on the I-495 Inner Loop on the American Legion Bridge Thursday afternoon.

Along with the tanker truck, three other cars were involved in the crash.

One person suffered minor injuries in the crash. The tanker truck driver escaped without injury.

Multiple agencies are at the scene, including a HazMat crew. Officials say the crew is working to contain a substance that spilled when the tanker overturned.

The tanker truck's owner, James River Petroleum, says special response personnel were dispatched.

According to Fairfax Fire and Rescue, the tanker spilled about 8,500 gallons of fuel.

Crews are still at the scene at 10:08 p.m. collecting the truck's fuel.

They say the spill appears to have been contained, and it did not reach the Potomac River.

Crews say after the scene has been cleared, it may take about 90 minutes for authorities to reopen the Inner Loop.

The crash caused a traffic nightmare across the region, causing gridlock on major roads during evening rush hour.
