Fire and smoke on tracks at Gallery Place-Chinatown Metro station affects train service

WASHINGTON - The Gallery Pl-Chinatown Metro station has reopened after it was temporarily closed for a smoke incident that occurred inside just before 6 p.m. Monday during the evening rush hour commute. But rail service on the Green and Yellow lines was affected for the remainder of Monday night.

According to a Metro spokesperson, employees extinguished a smoldering bolt on the tracks that resulted in the smoke.

D.C. Fire and EMS also responded to the station and tweeted the fire and smoke were put out and under control. One person was transported to the hospital for possible smoke inhalation, which is believed to be non-life-threatening.

At 7 p.m., Metro said service on the Red, Green and Yellow lines was restored. But that was only temporary as approximately 30 minutes later, train service on the Green and Yellow lines was suspended between Mt. Vernon Square and L'Enfant Plaza for needed emergency repairs related to the smoke.

At 9:47 p.m., Metro said normal service resumed on the Green and Yellow lines between these stations.
