Eyes on possible winter weather Sunday into Monday; passing snowflakes Wednesday

WASHINGTON - Some passing snowflakes are on the radar for Wednesday but all eyes are on a storm system that could possibly bring winter weather to our area by the end of the weekend.

FOX 5's Mike Thomas says Wednesday's passing flurries are nothing to worry about. Beginning Wednesday sometime between 10 a.m. and early afternoon, we could see what he calls, "conversational snow," move through the area.

Some areas, he says, will get enough of a burst to give grassy areas a light coating. Most in the region will not see any accumulation at all.

The real focus is on a system that will move closer and closer as we make our way through the weekend. Thomas says the storm system will hit California's coast Thursday into Friday as rain. It moves across the south and comes to our area by Sunday. How it will behave after that is the question.

Thomas says the system will either move south into the southwestern parts of Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina or it will move north in our direction. If it creeps north up the coast, he says, we could possibly see winter weather Sunday night into Monday.

We should know more, he says, after the storm reaches the west coast sometime Thursday into Friday.

"Someone is going to get winter weather," he says. "We're just waiting to see who!"
