Ex-University of Maryland football coach Mike Locksley's son shot, killed in Columbia

COLUMBIA, Md. - The son of a former University of Maryland football coach and current University of Alabama coach was shot and killed in Howard County late Sunday night.

Authorities said 25-year-old Meiko Anthony Locksley was shot tin the 5500 block of Harpers Farm Road in Columbia at about 10:20 p.m. He was rushed to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center where he died overnight.

Neighbor Grace Cole said she heard the gunshot, but didn't think anything of it because she assumed someone was setting off fireworks. She realized it was serious when she looked out her window.

"When I looked out of the window I saw them taking the guy, trying CPR on the stretcher and then they took him away," Cole recalled.

University of Alabama Head Football Coach Nick Saban released a statement identifying the victim as the son of Mike Locksley, Alabama's wide receivers coach and assistant offensive coordinator:

"Mike Locksley, our wide receivers coach and assistant offensive coordinator, had a family tragedy - his son was killed. I just want everybody to understand that our thoughts and prayers go out to Mike, Ms. Kia and the entire Locksley family over this tragedy. We'll do everything that we can to support Mike and his family in this time of tragedy."

Mike Locksley served as the offensive coordinator for Maryland from 2012 to 2015 before being named interim head coach 2015. He left the following year to join Alabama's staff.

In a statement, the University of Maryland Athletic Department said, "The entire Maryland Athletic Department's thoughts are with Mike Locksley and his family during this difficult time."

Police have no suspects or motives at this time.
