Electrical fire leaves hundreds without power at Silver Spring high-rise condo building

Two electrical fires in a three-day period have knocked out power to hundreds of residents at a condominium building in Silver Spring Tuesday night.

Pete Piringer of Montgomery County Fire and Rescue says residents at the University Towers will likely be without hot water and air conditioning as the electricity would likely be out for the remainder of the night.

The Red Cross is assisting residents and will be opening a shelter at Blair High School for anyone affected by the outage.

The 15-story building has 275 units and holds over 1,000 residents, according to Piringer.
