DC police ID victim in Shaw homicide

D.C. police have released the identity of a man who was shot to death in the Shaw neighborhood Sunday night.

Police say 19-year-old Tahlil Byrd of Southeast was shot and killed outside the Wonder Bread Factory near the Shaw-Howard University Metro station.

They responded to the scene in the 600 block of S Street around 10 p.m.

A doorbell camera in the neighborhood recorded gunshots, and the voice of a man crying out for help.

One neighbor, Nahem Simon, told FOX 5 that he's seen an uptick in crime in the area.

According to Simon, his camera has recoded seven violent crimes in just the last two months.

Simon also said a suspect pulled a gun on him during one incident.

Crime statistics from D.C. police confirmed a 50 percent surge in violent crime this year compared to last year.

Officers have no suspects or motives in Sunday night's homicide at this time. The shooting is still under investigation.
