DC officials warn of vehicle break-in surge
WASHINGTON - The Metropolitan Police Department and DC Mayor Muriel Bowser issued "friendly citations" around Ward 4 on Monday.
Authorities said the District experiences a surge in thefts during the summer and the $0 tickets were to remind residents to lock their car doors and keep valuable belongings out of sight.
Officials spoke to neighbors on the street to share tips about keeping their property safe.
The effort was part of Back to Basics DC, a push to keep the District moving forward and to showcase the work of DC government employees.
