DC man charged with fatally stabbing another man in Columbia Heights

A man was arrested for a deadly stabbing in Northwest D.C. Friday afternoon.

D.C. police say 68-year-old Anthony Anderson, of Northwest D.C., was stabbed multiple times near a crosswalk in the 3600 block of 14th Street at Perry Place in the Columbia Heights neighborhood at around 4:30 p.m.

Anderson was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According to police, 54-year-old Alton Rivers, of Northwest D.C., was taken into custody after being detained by an off-duty D.C. police officer who witnessed an assault in the area. A patrol officer who responded to the scene then took the suspect into custody.

Witnesses told FOX 5 that the men were fighting just before the stabbing and a screwdriver appeared to be used in the attack.

It is unknown at this time what led to the stabbing and if the two men knew each other.

Rivers has been charged with second-degree murder while armed.
