DC man breaks into Ocasio-Cortez's office building

QUEENS, NY (FOX 5 DC) - A trespasser from DC broke into a Queens office building housing campaign offices for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez before spraying police with a fire extinguisher and hiding in a closet Saturday, police say.

New York police tell Fox 5 DC that the man broke into the Jackson Heights building around 5 p.m. Saturday before the bizarre confrontation with officers. The intruder sprayed police with a fire extinguisher when they arrived, then hid in a utility closet.

Police say they later convinced the man to exit the closet, then they took him to a nearby hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.

31-year-old Douala Hashi of Northwest DC now faces charges of criminal trespass, menacing and criminal mischief, police say.

Police tell Fox 5 DC that the man made it to the same floor as the congresswoman's office, but did not break inside.

Ocasio-Cortez was in Washington on Saturday. Her staff did not immediately return messages seeking comment.
