Dad: Virginia teen hurt in NY's Central Park is healing

NEW YORK (AP) -- A Virginia teenager who lost part of his leg when he stepped on an explosive device in New York's Central Park is healing and hopes to return to college.

Kevin Golden spoke about his son, Connor, during a Manhattan hospital press conference Monday.

The 19-year-old University of Miami student from Fairfax, Virginia, was at the park July 3 with friends when he stepped on a rock covering the explosive.

His father says Connor understood his leg had to be amputated beneath the knee.

Kevin Golden says Connor is encouraged about advancements in prosthetics. It's not clear when he's getting out of the hospital.

The father says it's "difficult to make sense of this type of incident."

Investigators don't believe the device was meant to intentionally hurt anyone.
